+ - Nanyang Technological University – NTU

A Global Research Powerhouse

NTU has in recent years positioned itself firmly at the forefront of strategic research in Singapore, winning a growing number of key competitive grants for its projects.

Sustainability research accounts for the largest proportion of grants won over the years. With about S$1.3 billion for sustainability research, NTU is making a name globally in this area. Its broad range of “green” projects covers clean water, environmental engineering, energy and earth sciences.

Bearing testament to its research capabilities and the relevance of its research, the university’s competitive research funding has multiplied manifold in the past five years. From 2005 to 2013, NTU won more than S$3.17 billion in competitive research funding. These awards include S$270 million from the Singapore government for two Research Centres of Excellence, the Earth Observatory of Singapore and Singapore Centre on Environmental Life Sciences Engineering, reaffirming NTU’s leadership in the earth sciences and environmental engineering.

NTU has consistently demonstrated its research edge since the inaugural Competitive Research Programme grant call in April 2007. Reflecting its strengths in urban sustainability, in 2010, four of its research projects won the lion’s share of awarded grants – up to S$40 million – from the National Research Foundation following its fifth call for proposals on “Sustainable Urban Systems”. Only five out of the 68 proposals received under the Competitive Research Programme were recommended and selected for funding.

Oceanus Group has signed an umbrella MOU for research collaboration in the following possible areas :

  • Microbial water treatment technology for Aquaculture use
  • Sustained hormonal/ Enzyme delivery
  • Use of renewal Energy in Aquaculture farms
  • Recirculation Technologies
  • Water treatment technologies

+ - School of Applied Science - Temasek Polytechnic

Established in 2001 after 7 years under the nurturing wings of the then Temasek Information Technology & Applied Science School (ITAS), the School has now evolved to become an institution that engages innovative ways to train and educate school leavers and the workforce, and carves niche applied research areas that benefit students, industries and the community. From its humble offering of the Food Science & Nutrition diploma first conducted in July 1995 at the Portsdown Road Campus, the School now offers 7 full-time diplomas and 3 part-time diplomas in response to the dynamic changes in the vibrant food, F&B, chemical and life sciences industries.

To ensure our students stay relevant and competitive in a rapidly global world, the School has designed an ability-driven curriculum to develop Competence, Character and Change-readiness. The School also identifies niche areas in applied research to accelerate the professional growth of its staff and keep abreast of the latest developments. These niche areas include Traditional Chinese Medicine, membrane technology, plant biotechnology, proteomics, nanotechnology, analytical services, environment and water technology, baking science and technology, hydroponics and nutrition assessment. Often undertaken with industrial involvement, these projects offer a platform for multi-disciplinary technical teams of staff and students to collaborate and innovate.

Oceanus Group has signed a MOU for research collaboration in the following areas :

  • Selective Genetic Breeding :
    1. Identification of genes associated with growth variations in farmed Abalone (Haliotis Discus Hannai)
    2. Identification of the transcriptome and proteome markers responsible for the growth of abalone
    3. Establishment microsatellite/SNP markers for QTL mapping and parentage assignment
    4. Possible social and environmental factors that influence the growth rate of abalone by analysing various growth related parameters
    5. Outcome :
      1. Early screening of fast growing Abalones for culture and broodstock development
      2. Development of a new and possibly superior proprietary species of Abalone
  • Proprietary Feed formulation & animal nutrition

+ - Biovalence Sdn Bhd

Biovalence is a Bio technology company that has perfected a method of producing the tails of bacteriophages (viruses of bacteria) to specifically target EMS-causing Vibrio parahaemolyticus. EMS or Early Mortality Syndrome is a fairly recent disease of shrimp that has caused widespread losses to shrimp farmers in affected countries, of which China is one of them.

The technology is useful to not only produce virus-free SPF but also EMS-free SPF shrimp which is the only one of its kind in the world at this point in time.

Oceanus Group has signed a collaboration MOU with Biovalence in the following areas :

  • Joint Venture for Production of RSPF Prawn Brooder
  • To grow RSPF juveniles within OCEANUS’ facilities in China in order to supply the China market.
  • Biovalence has a process of producing RSPF post larvae and juvenile shrimps; rendering the shrimps virus free
  • The RSPF Prawn brooder market is worth an estimated US$100m in China alone.

+ - School of Applied Science - Republic Polytechnic

The Republic Polytechnic was set up on 1 August 2002 through the passage of The Republic Polytechnic Act 2002 by Parliament.

The Polytechnic received its first intake of over 800 students in July 2003 at its Tanglin Campus. It has moved to its permanent campus in Woodlands since March 2006 and supports 14,000 students.

The first educational institution in Singapore to leverage the Problem-based Learning approach for all its diploma programmes, Republic Polytechnic (RP) has six schools and two academic centres offering thirty-nine diplomas in Applied Science, Engineering, Enterprise and Communication, Events and Hospitality, Infocomm, Sports, Health & Leisure, and Technology for the Arts.

The School of Applied Science (SAS) is one of the largest Science schools in Singapore with a yearly intake of more than 700 students. SAS pool of academic expertise and advanced facilities is currently leading in the forefront of exciting developments in the field of applied science and through industry partnerships and hands-on experience in their state-of-the-art facilities. SAS maintains strong partnerships with key industry players and is actively engaged in ground-breaking research initiatives.

Oceanus Group has signed a collaboration MOU with Republic Polytechnic in the following areas :

  • Internship for Students and Award of Oceanus Scholarship
  • Development of local talent in the areas of Fishery management, aquaculture development, operation and management

+ - Ji Mei University – Fisheries College

Jimei University, one of the key universities in Fujian Province, is a multi-disciplined university with a history of over 90 years. Located in Jimei School Village founded by the famous patriotic overseas Chinese leader Mr. Tan Kah-Kee (Chen Jiageng), Jimei University has now a student population of more than 26,000 and a faculty of over 1500 among whom, over 200 are professors and 580 associate professors.

Jimei University is one of the earlier universities of its kind in Fujian Province entitled to enroll international students including those from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and overseas Chinese students. It has under it 20 colleges with 2 doctoral programs, 56 postgraduate programs, 2 course master programs in 10 fields and 66 undergraduate programs in nine disciplines with key major from preparatory course to degree education of bachelor, master and doctor in maritime majors such as nautical navigation, marine engineering and Fisheries as its hallmark and mainstay.

Oceanus Group has an ongoing collaboration with Ji Mei University for Students Internship and possible Joint Research Collaboration in the following area of Specialty :

  • Aquatic seedling production
  • Breeding technology
  • Disease surveillance, prevention and cure
  • Fishery management, aquaculture development, operation and management
