“The old ways can’t handle new demands”
How on earth are we going to feed almost 10 billion people by 2050 without wiping out our planet’s resources? In this episode of Advancements, Emmy-winning actor and environmental advocate Ted Danson explores one of the most urgent questions of our time: the future of global food security.
Our food systems today are highly wasteful. We waste as much as one-third of what is produced: Grains rot in government warehouses, small farmers struggle to sell their harvests, retailers throw away edible food because of shelf-life restrictions, and consumers pay inflated prices when trade breaks down. These gaps don’t just waste food. They waste water, energy, and hours of human effort.
Why is this happening? There’s a complex myriad of reasons, but one glaring factor is that the global food trade suffers from outdated payment systems, paperwork-heavy processes, and limited access to financing. This especially affects Small-Medium Enterprises (SMEs), which conduct 76% of global trade in general. Oceanus estimates that out of the current USD$2 trillion trade finance gap, about $151 billion is related to food trade, largely impacting the least developed countries.
But what if there were a way to cut through these inefficiencies so that food gets where it’s needed, when it’s needed?
For the past few years, Oceanus Group, a Singapore-based company, has been quietly working on a solution to an ambitious vision: a world of Food Without Borders. Oceanus is not just rethinking food production. It’s also reimagining the way food is traded, stored, and delivered and distributed around the world.
Enter ODIN: the Oceanus Digital Intelligence Network. This groundbreaking platform promises to tackle some of the deepest inefficiencies in the global food trade. It’s designed to help SMEs overcome the barriers of financing, traceability, and complex global logistics. This means that finance is de-risked, and the flow of capital can be connected with the physical flow of food, thus optimising supply chain logistics.
Danson and the Advancements team shine a spotlight on these issues and more, exploring how Oceanus is pioneering a solution for a smarter, greener, and fairer food supply chain. But the episode isn’t only about technology and digital platforms. At its heart, it’s really about uncovering what these innovations could mean for communities, economies, and the billions of lives that depend on a stable food system.
